The Background
The most recent statistics released by EuStat document that there were 3876 fatal accidents at work in the EU during 2015, an increase of 102 deaths compared with the year before. It should be noted that injuries must be recorded when it results in more than 3 or more consecutive days workings days must be reported to the HSA (Health and Safety Authority).
In Ireland, the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 sets out the main provisions for securing and improving the safety, health and welfare of people at work. The law applies to all places of work regardless of how many workers are employed and includes the self-employed.
Employers (including self-employed persons) are also responsible for creating and maintaining a safe and healthy workplace. Among many responsibilities an employer is responsible for providing information, instruction, training and supervision regarding safety and health to employees.
We were contacted by Tramex Ltd., an internationally distributed manufacturer of moisture meters which has a strong industry presence given its 44 years in operation. Given the business has both office and production space on their premises, they required Occupational Health & Safety Training for their team.
The Challenge
As with all SME’s downtime within an organisation is costly both financially and operationally. A priority of Tramex was to ensure that their team were trained to a high standard but also to limit the amount of downtime for the team as customers are provided with defined turnaround times on product delivery.
As a manufacturer the team are regularly lifting, pulling and involved in the development of products as well as everyday office operations. It was important that the team understood the training for both Manual Handling and Fire Safety. Historically, Tramex opted for traditional training which was not only costly but also did not provide the access to ongoing awareness that employees greatly benefit from.
The Result
Our onsite trainer was very well suited to the role and engaged everyone in the practical demonstration. The training helped us identify some additional needs within our organisation to become more familiar with the processes that need to be in place should a fire break out. Highly Recommended.
Having provided the team with access to the Illuminate Learning Platform, employees were able to watch the Manual Handling and Fire Safety animations. Throughout the training process, our team were able to provide insights into employees who had yet to take the training and those who had already been successful, providing data to support this activity. Another advantage for Tramex was the ability for the team to view the training on any device, mobile, tablet or desktop which increased engagement and compliance.
Once all Tramex employees had viewed and passed the online assessment, our OHS Trainer conducted an on-site practical demonstration in both Fire Safety and Manual Handling. Given the knowledge already obtained during the awareness element of the program, the practical offered a refresher on the key points and also ensured the business was compliant with the relevant legal obligations of an employer.
Our focus is on engaging employees and making training captivating, with 12 months access this was an important factor on the ROI for Tramex.
